🎯 Verdict

The Volvo XC90 Mk1 is a fantastic family hauler if you buy the right version. For European buyers, the D5 diesel is the absolute best choice. The early 163 hp (Euro 3) is the most reliable, while the later 185/200 hp versions are better to drive but require strict attention to the auxiliary belt and swirl flaps. Avoid the T6 petrol at all costs due to its fatal transmission flaw. The 2.5T is the safest petrol bet. Budget for regular suspension and brake replacements, and ensure the automatic transmission has been serviced. A well-maintained D5 can easily exceed 400,000 km.
