Volvo XC40 I (XZ) (2017 – 2022)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The Volvo XC40 (Generation I - XZ) is the first compact SUV from the Swedish brand, introducing the modular CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform. Voted Car of the Year in 2018, it established itself with its distinctive design, clever interior space, and first-class passive and active safety. Although initially launched with classic internal combustion engines (petrol and diesel), the XC40 quickly made its energy transition. It first welcomed plug-in hybrid versions (PHEV - T4 and T5 Recharge) before becoming Volvo's first 100% electric model with the Recharge Twin (408 hp) version in 2020, followed by the Recharge Single (231 hp). The electric version stands out with the native integration of the Android Automotive infotainment system (integrated Google), a first on the market. Whi

🎯 Verdict

The first-generation Volvo XC40 is an extremely accomplished premium SUV. In its 100% electric version (Recharge), it represents the best choice in the range thanks to its superior driving pleasure and integrated Google system. The Twin Motor version is an endearing rocket but heavy on tires; the Single Motor (front-wheel drive) version is a more rational and sufficient choice for daily use. Buying advice: Prioritize an electric model from late 2021 or 2022, where the initial issues with the TCAM module have been resolved. If you opt for a PHEV, ensure that gearbox maintenance has been meticulously followed. Avoid diesels (D3/D4) unless you exclusively drive on highways.
