The Volvo V40 Gen 1 is a tale of two cars. The early Phase 1 models and those equipped with the Mitsubishi GDI or early Renault diesel engines should be avoided. However, a Phase 2 (2001-2004) model equipped with a Volvo petrol engine (especially the 2.0 naturally aspirated or 2.0T LPT) is a fantastic, safe, and highly reliable modern classic. Ensure the timing belt and VVT hub have been serviced, and check the PCV system. If these are healthy, it represents excellent value for money.
