Volvo S80 I (P2) (1998 – 2006)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The Volvo S80 Generation I (P2) was introduced in 1998 as Volvo's flagship executive sedan, marking a radical departure from the brand's traditional boxy styling. It was the first vehicle built on the highly successful P2 platform (later shared with the V70, S60, and XC90). Renowned for its exceptional seat comfort, outstanding crash safety, and high-quality audio systems, the S80 was a formidable alternative to German rivals. While early models (1998-2002) suffered from electronic gremlins (notably the Magneti Marelli ETM on petrols) and severe automatic transmission issues on the T6 variants, the introduction of Volvo's in-house D5 diesel engine in 2001 transformed the car. The D5 offered an incredible blend of torque, reliability, and fuel economy. A mid-cycle facelift in 2003/2004 brou

🎯 Verdict

The Volvo S80 Mk1 is a tale of two eras. Avoid the 1998-2002 petrol models, especially the T6, due to catastrophic transmission failures and ETM/electronic nightmares. However, a post-2003 facelift model, particularly with the D5 diesel engine, is an absolute bargain. The D5 is one of the best diesel engines ever made, capable of exceeding 500,000 km with basic care. If buying a diesel, prioritize proof of timing belt AND auxiliary belt replacement. For petrol buyers, a late-model 2.5T is the sweet spot. Expect to replace front suspension components regularly, but you will be rewarded with unmatched comfort and safety.
