Reliability score : 8.2/10

The Volvo S70 (generation I, based on the P80 platform) is the direct replacement for the legendary Volvo 850 sedan. Launched in late 1996 for the 1997 model year, it stands out with a softened design (over 1800 modifications compared to the 850), a completely redesigned interior with better quality materials, and safety improvements (optimized SIPS system, introduction of WHIPS in 1999). 🎯 Verdict

The Volvo S70 is an excellent gateway into the world of reliable and daily-drivable youngtimers. Its 5-cylinder engine is legendary for its robustness and sound. However, the production year is crucial. 1997 and 1998 models (cable throttle, Motronic management) are highly recommended for their superior electronic reliability. 1999 and 2000 models are just as enjoyable but require proof that the throttle body (ETM) has been replaced or made reliable (Xemodex), and that the ABS module has been refurbished. In all cases, a service history proving regular replacement of the PCV system and timing belt is essential.
