Volvo S40 II (MS) (2004 – 2012)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The second-generation Volvo S40 (MS) marked a turning point for the Swedish manufacturer. Based on Ford's excellent C1 platform (shared with the Ford Focus II and Mazda 3 BK), it shed the sluggish handling of its predecessor to offer first-class dynamism while retaining Volvo's DNA: exceptional passive safety, orthopedic seats of unparalleled comfort, and a clean Scandinavian design (with the famous floating center console). Restyled in 2007 (revised bumpers, LED lights, interior improvements), it was available with a multitude of engines. While diesels (from PSA/Ford or Volvo) dominated the European market, petrol engines are now the most relevant and reliable choice on the used market, especially the melodious and robust in-house 5-cylinders.

🎯 Verdict

The Volvo S40 II is an excellent compact sedan, often undervalued on the used car market. If you opt for a petrol engine (especially the 5-cylinder 2.4i or T5), it is a highly recommended purchase. These engines offer rare driving pleasure and bulletproof reliability, at the cost of slightly higher fuel consumption. The Ford-sourced 4-cylinder petrol engines (1.8 and 2.0) are pragmatic and very solid choices. However, avoid the 109 hp 1.6D diesel, whose costly failures (turbo, DPF, injectors) will ruin the experience. Prioritize a post-2007 (facelifted) model for better finish and more reliable electronics.
