The Volvo C40 Recharge (recently renamed EC40 in 2024 to harmonize the electric range) is a premium compact coupe SUV based on the CMA platform, shared with the XC40 and the Polestar 2. The technical update (facelift/MY24) introduced in 2023 is major: Volvo abandoned front-wheel drive (FWD) in favor of rear-wheel drive (RWD) for the single-motor versions, and introduced new in-house developed electric motors along with an 82 kWh battery. This change radically improved efficiency, range, and driving pleasure. Exclusively available as a 100% electric vehicle (unlike the XC40 which had ICE and PHEV versions), the C40 stands out with its sloping roofline design, integrated Google infotainment system, and excellent safety level. Overall rating: 8.5/10.
The Volvo C40 Recharge (EC40) in its facelifted version (2023+) is an extremely accomplished electric vehicle. The switch from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive corrected the main flaw of the early versions: excessively high consumption. Mechanical and electrical reliability is excellent, with the only real annoyances coming from software bugs (Android Automotive) or the connectivity module (TCAM), largely corrected by OTA updates. The Single Motor Extended Range (252 hp / 82 kWh) version is the most rational choice, offering the best range and very fast charging (200 kW). Buy with complete confidence, checking the condition of the tires and the proper connectivity of the system.
