Its reliability is generally good, especially after the 2015 facelift and with the EA211/EA288 engines. For intensive road and highway use, the 2.0 TDI versions (particularly the post-2015 EA288) are to be preferred. They offer an excellent compromise between performance and consumption, provided that only short trips are avoided, which would clog the DPF and EGR. Rigorous maintenance of the DSG gearbox is imperative if the vehicle is equipped with one. For more mixed or lower mileage use, the 1.4 TSI (CZDA post-2015) or 2.0 TSI (DEDA post-2015) are safer options than their predecessors, but fuel consumption will logically be higher. Whatever the choice, a clear service history is crucial. Negotiate the price if the history is incomplete or if known weaknesses have not been addressed.
