Volkswagen Polo VI (AW/BZ) The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo (AW), launched in late 2017, represents a massive leap forward for the nameplate. Built on the highly versatile MQB A0 platform, it grew significantly in size, offering interior space and boot capacity (351 liters) rivaling older Golf generations. It positioned itself as the premium offering in the B-segment, prioritizing refinement, ride quality, and advanced technology over pure driving dynamics. A significant facelift was introduced in 2021, bringing standard LED headlights (with optional IQ.Light Matrix LEDs), a standard digital instrument cluster, revised bumpers, and upgraded interior materials to address complaints about hard plastics in the pre-facelift models. The infotainment system was also upgraded to the MIB3 arch
The Volkswagen Polo VI (AW) is one of the most rational and sensible purchases in the B-segment. It offers the refinement, space, and technology of a car from the class above. Buying Advice: The sweet spot of the range is the 1.0 TSI (95 or 110 hp) paired with a manual gearbox. This combination offers excellent reliability, low running costs, and enough punch for highway driving. If you must have an automatic, be aware that the DQ200 DSG requires mechanical sympathy (avoid creeping in traffic without fully engaging the clutch) and may require expensive repairs past 100,000 km. Avoid the 1.6 TDI unless you exclusively drive on the highway, as modern diesels suffer heavily in urban environments. Pre-facelift models (2017-2020) are great value, but the 2021+ facelift offers significantly better interior quality and lighting.
