Volkswagen Passat B9 (Typ 32) The ninth generation of the Volkswagen Passat (B9) marks a historic turning point for the model: in Europe, it is now exclusively available as an estate (SW / Variant), the sedan having been sacrificed on the altar of SUVs and aerodynamics (although it survives in China under the names Magotan and Passat Pro). Developed jointly with the Skoda Superb (and assembled in the same Bratislava factory), it is based on the MQB Evo platform. This generation corrects the ergonomic errors of the late B8/Golf 8 era: the return of real physical buttons on the steering wheel, finally backlit touch sliders for climate control, and the introduction of the much smoother MIB4 infotainment system (12.9 to 15-inch screen). Technically, it introduces the DCC Pro adaptive suspensio
The Volkswagen Passat B9 is the culmination of VW's thermal lineage. By focusing solely on the estate in Europe, it embraces its role as a large family touring car and fleet vehicle. For a petrol engine purchase, the 1.5 eTSI 150 hp is the most rational choice: it is extremely frugal thanks to micro-hybridization and aerodynamics, and the EA211 evo2 engine is now very reliable. The only downside: the DQ200 dry-clutch DSG7 gearbox, which requires gentle handling in the city to last. If the budget allows, the 2.0 TSI 204 hp offers a high level of driving pleasure with a much more robust wet-clutch DSG gearbox (DQ381), ideal for those who drive with heavy loads or in the mountains. The eHybrid (PHEV) versions are technologically impressive (100 km of real-world range), but their technical complexity (thermal engine + electric motor + large battery + complex onboard charger) advises caution for a very long-term purchase outside of warranty. Verdict: An excellent choice for high-mileage drivers seeking supreme comfort, provided that initial software updates have been performed.
