The Volkswagen Passat B8 (codename 3G) is based on the modular MQB platform. Launched in late 2014, it marked a significant upgrade compared to the B7, with a finish bordering on the premium segment, benchmark roominess, and a cutting-edge technological arsenal. The 2019 facelift brought technological updates (MIB3 infotainment, Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving) and the introduction of the 1.5 TSI evo engine. Note: the sedan version was withdrawn from the European catalog at the end of 2021, leaving the wagon (SW/Variant) alone until the arrival of the B9. Overall, the B8 is an extremely accomplished road car, whose mechanical reliability (especially on the EA211 and EA888 Gen 3 petrol engines) has largely corrected the shortcomings of previous generations.
The Volkswagen Passat B8 is an excellent rational choice. With petrol engines, it shines with the rediscovered reliability of its TSI units (EA211 and EA888 Gen 3), erasing the nightmares of timing chains from previous generations. The 1.4 TSI 150 hp or 1.5 TSI evo represent the ideal compromise for 80% of drivers. The main point of vigilance remains the transmission: opt for a manual gearbox on smaller engines for complete peace of mind, as the DSG7 (DQ200) remains the group's Achilles' heel. If you choose a 2.0 TSI or a 2.0 TDI, the wet-clutch DSG gearboxes are robust, provided they have been meticulously serviced. An excellent road car, to buy with confidence with a clear history.
