The Volkswagen Passat B8 (Type 3G), launched in late 2014 and sold until 2023 (the sedan was discontinued in 2022 in Europe, the SW/Variant wagon continued), marks a significant upgrade compared to the B7. Based on the modular MQB platform, it loses weight while gaining in spaciousness and rigidity. A true queen of company fleets in Europe, it stands out for its highway comfort, rigorous finish, and technological arsenal (Digital Cockpit, advanced driver assistance systems). A facelift (Phase 2) occurred in 2019, bringing multimedia updates (MIB3), minor aesthetic tweaks, and engine evolution (TDI Evo with dual AdBlue injection). Although generally very well built, its reliability heavily depends on the choice of transmission (DSG) and the type of journey (diesel clogging).
The Volkswagen Passat B8 is an excellent road car, brilliant in its homogeneity, interior space, and comfort. It is a highly recommendable used car purchase, provided you choose the right version. The 1.4 TSI and 1.5 TSI petrol engines (with manual gearbox) are the safest choices for mixed use. For high-mileage drivers, the 2.0 TDI 150 hp is supreme, but requires checking if the water pump has been replaced. AVOID the 1.6 TDI (undersized and fragile) as well as the 2.0 BiTDI 240 hp (prohibitive maintenance costs and turbo fragility). Be extremely vigilant about the history of DSG automatic gearboxes.
