The Volkswagen Passat B5.5 (internal code name 3BG or Type 3B3 for the sedan / 3B6 for the SW wagon) is a deep facelift of the B5 generation. Launched in late 2000 (model year 2001), it embodies Ferdinand Piëch's desire to push Volkswagen towards the premium segment. It stands out for its exceptional interior finish quality for the time, a longitudinal engine architecture (shared with the Audi A4 B5/B6), and the use of a complex multi-link front suspension. While diesel engines (notably the legendary 1.9 TDI) made its success in Europe, its gasoline range is particularly rich, ranging from the modest 1.6 MPI to the very exotic (and fragile) 4.0 W8. Today, it is an affordable youngtimer, but its advanced age requires strict vigilance regarding peripherals and comfort electronics.
The Volkswagen Passat B5.5 is an excellent road car that marked its era with its manufacturing quality. In terms of gasoline engines, the 1.8T 20V is undeniably the best choice: powerful, reliable (if regularly serviced), and economical to use. The V6 versions offer superior driving pleasure but significantly increase the maintenance budget. Avoid the W8, a true financial black hole. The crucial point before purchase is not so much the engine (often robust) as the condition of the multi-link front suspension and the absence of water ingress in the cabin. Prioritize a model with a clear history and cleaned windshield cowl drains.
