The Volkswagen ID.7 (E3H generation) represents the flagship of the German manufacturer's electric range (ID family). Designed to indirectly succeed the Passat sedan (now only available as a wagon), it is based on an optimized evolution of the MEB platform. Its positioning is that of a large cruiser (nearly 5 meters long) focused on aerodynamic efficiency (Cx of 0.23), ride comfort, and range. It inaugurates the new APP550 rear motor, significantly more powerful and efficient than previous iterations, as well as the MIB4 infotainment system (software 4.0) which finally corrects the ergonomic shortcomings and sluggishness of the early ID models. It is available as a fastback sedan and a wagon (Tourer). Overall design rating: Excellent.
The Volkswagen ID.7 is arguably the brand's most accomplished electric vehicle to date. It corrects almost all the flaws criticized in the ID.3 and ID.4 at their launch, notably thanks to an infotainment system that is finally up to par (MIB4) and class-leading motor efficiency (APP550). Although there is still insufficient hindsight on long-term reliability, the maturity of the MEB platform works in its favor. It is an excellent choice for high-mileage drivers looking for an electric alternative to traditional diesel sedans, provided they accept an imposing size and a steep entry price. The Pro version (77 kWh) is already more than sufficient for 90% of uses.
