The Vauxhall Mokka X (or Opel Mokka X in continental Europe, Buick Encore in North America/China) is the facelift of the first generation (Mokka A) of General Motors' urban SUV. Introduced in 2016, it adopts the 'X' suffix to emphasize its SUV positioning. Based on the GM Gamma II platform, it stands out with an upgraded finish, a modernized infotainment system (IntelliLink), and the introduction of new engines. Although replaced in 2020 by the Mokka B (under the Stellantis/PSA era), the Mokka X remains a very widespread model. In diesel, it relies exclusively on the GM-designed 1.6 CDTi 'Whisper Diesel' block, which replaces the old Isuzu-sourced 1.7 CDTi of the pre-facelift versions.
The Vauxhall/Opel Mokka X is a robust, well-equipped, and safe small SUV, particularly relevant in its AWD version for mountainous regions. However, buying a 1.6 CDTi diesel version requires extreme caution. The design of this engine (timing chain on the gearbox side) turns common chain wear into an astronomical bill (often over €2,000). If you opt for the diesel, demand a model whose chain has already been replaced with supporting invoices, or heavily negotiate the price. For a more peaceful purchase, the 140 hp 1.4 Turbo petrol engine (B14NET) is a much more rational and economical long-term choice, despite its minor peripheral flaws (PCV valve, water pump) which are easy and inexpensive to repair.
