Toyota Yaris II (XP90) (2005 – 2011)

Reliability score : 8.6/10

The Toyota Yaris II (XP90 generation) has the challenging task of succeeding the first generation, which forged the model's reputation. Designed at the European design center ED2 and produced in Valenciennes (for Europe), it grew by 11 cm but remained under 3.80 m. It stands out with record spaciousness for its category, made possible by a sliding rear bench seat, and retains its central digital instrumentation. Restyled in early 2009 (Phase 2), it received slight aesthetic touches and new engines (including the 1.33 VVT-i with Stop & Start). It is a model renowned for its exceptional reliability in gasoline versions, although the MMT automated manual gearbox and certain diesel engine peripherals slightly tarnish this record.

🎯 Verdict

The Toyota Yaris II is a true automotive 'workhorse': economical, indestructible (in gasoline versions), and very practical thanks to its sliding bench seat. It is one of the best used city cars on the market. The ideal choice is the 1.3 VVT-i (87 hp) with a manual gearbox, which offers the best compromise between absolute reliability, versatility, and running costs. The 1.0 is perfect for the city but a bit underpowered on the open road. The 1.4 D-4D diesel is best reserved for high-mileage drivers, otherwise, it risks costly clogging. Golden rule: absolutely avoid models equipped with the MMT automated manual gearbox, a source of expensive breakdowns and disastrous driving pleasure.
