The first-generation Toyota RAV4 (XA10) is considered the absolute pioneer of the modern compact SUV segment (Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive). Launched in 1994, it revolutionized the market by abandoning the traditional ladder frame chassis of pure off-road vehicles in favor of a unibody structure (borrowing elements from the Corolla and Carina). Available in 3-door, 5-door (from 1995), and even a convertible version (Soft-Top from 1998), it offers road handling similar to a sedan while retaining real off-road capabilities thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive. A facelift occurred in late 1997, bringing smooth-lens headlights, a revised grille, a modernized interior, and improved passive safety. Today, the XA10 has acquired true Youngtimer status thanks to its iconic 90s
The Toyota RAV4 XA10 is a monument in automotive history and an excellent choice for entering the world of Youngtimers or for utility/leisure use. Its mechanics (the famous 2.0L 3S-FE) are incredibly robust, capable of exceeding 400,000 km with basic maintenance. However, its advanced age makes chassis inspection paramount: rust is the only true cause of death for this model. If you find a healthy example (without perforating corrosion) and the 5th gear doesn't pop out, it's a highly recommended purchase. Opt for the 5-door version for practicality, or the 3-door for fun and style.
