Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 (J120) (2002 – 2009)

Reliability score : 8.8/10

The Toyota Land Cruiser 120 Series (known as the Prado in many markets, or simply Land Cruiser in Europe) is a true automotive legend. Built on a robust ladder frame chassis, it offers an exceptional compromise between outstanding off-road capabilities and on-road comfort. Replacing the 90 series, the J120 introduced modern technologies (TEMS air suspension on high trim levels, electronic off-road aids) while retaining Toyota's indestructible DNA. In Europe, it was primarily sold with the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV) diesel engine, which saw several power upgrades (163, 166, and then 173 hp). Although its overall reliability is legendary (excellent ADAC breakdown rate of 1.5/1000), the diesel engine requires special attention on one specific point: the injector seals. 🎯 Verdict

The Toyota Land Cruiser J120 is a masterpiece of durability, fully justifying its popularity and high prices on the used market. Reliability surveys (ADAC, TÜV, What Car?) consistently rank it among the most robust vehicles of its generation. However, buying a 3.0 D-4D diesel version (the most common in Europe) should not be done blindly: the injector seal issue is real and can destroy the engine if the oil strainer gets clogged. If you find an example with a sound chassis (no perforating corrosion) and a clear maintenance history (injector seals replaced, strainer checked), it is a highly recommended purchase that will take you to the ends of the earth.
