Toyota Corolla Verso II (AR10) (2004 – 2009)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The second-generation Toyota Corolla Verso (internal code AR10) marked a turning point in the compact MPV segment in Europe. Designed specifically for the European market and assembled in Turkey, it stood out with its Easy Flat-7 system, allowing the second and third-row seats to fold flat into the floor to create a perfectly flat surface, a major innovation at the time. Restyled in 2007 (new bumpers, LED taillights, modified grille), it built its reputation on exemplary modularity and high-level safety (5 Euro NCAP stars). However, its reliability record is extremely polarized: while the gasoline engines are true benchmarks for longevity, the diesel blocks (particularly the AD series 2.2-liter) severely tarnished Toyota's reputation for infallibility due to major design flaws.

🎯 Verdict

The Toyota Corolla Verso II is a two-faced vehicle. If you opt for a gasoline version (1.6 or 1.8 VVT-i) with a manual gearbox, you are buying one of the most reliable and durable MPVs of its generation, capable of exceeding 300,000 km without a hitch. On the other hand, the diesel versions (which represent the majority of the used car market) are true problem nests, especially the 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT, whose engine block design defect can lead to repair bills exceeding the vehicle's value. Also, avoid the MMT automated gearbox, a source of breakdowns and discomfort.
