Suzuki Jimny II (JB23) (1998 – 2018)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The second-generation Suzuki Jimny (often called 3rd generation internationally, codes JB23/JB33/JB43/JB53) is a true off-road icon. Replacing the Samurai, it retains a rustic and purist architecture: ladder frame, rigid front and rear axles, and selectable 4x4 transmission with a transfer case (low range). While it is formidable off-road thanks to its light weight and characteristic angles, its on-road performance (comfort, handling, sound insulation) is from another era. It has undergone several major evolutions, notably the switch to the chain-driven M13A engine, the introduction of the VVT system, and an interior redesign in 2005 and then 2012. It's a 'love at first sight' or utility purchase, whose value on the used market remains exceptionally high.

🎯 Verdict

The Suzuki Jimny II is a fantastic tool, not an everyday car. If you're looking for a comfortable urban SUV, run away. If you need a real 4x4 for mountains, forests, hunting, or pure off-roading, it's the undisputed king of its category. Absolutely prioritize the 1.3 M13A petrol engine (post-2001, ideally VVT post-2005) for its unshakeable reliability. Avoid the 65 hp diesels and be very vigilant about the bodywork condition (rust) and steering vibrations before purchase.
