Suzuki Jimny II (JB23) (1998 – 2018)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The 1998–2018 Suzuki Jimny (often referred to globally as the 3rd generation, chassis codes JB23/JB33/JB43/JB53) is a legendary, no-nonsense compact 4x4. Built on a robust ladder-frame chassis with rigid 3-link solid axles and a dual-ratio transfer case, it is a genuine off-roader rather than a modern crossover. While its on-road manners are compromised (bouncy ride, noisy, slow, and poor safety ratings), its off-road capability is virtually unmatched in its price bracket. It received several updates over its 20-year lifespan, notably in 2005 (interior update, push-button 4WD, VVT engine) and 2012 (exterior facelift). Mechanically, the petrol versions are incredibly reliable, but the model is heavily prone to rust and specific suspension wear issues.

🎯 Verdict

The Suzuki Jimny (1998-2018) is a highly specialized vehicle. If you buy it as a highway cruiser or a family car, you will hate it. If you buy it as a weekend off-roader, a rural workhorse, or a winter runabout, you will absolutely love it. Mechanically, the 1.3L petrol models are incredibly tough and will easily surpass 250,000 km with basic maintenance. However, rust is the ultimate enemy of this generation. Finding a clean, rust-free example is becoming difficult and expensive. Avoid the 1.5 DDiS diesel entirely due to its poor reliability record. If you find a rust-free 1.3L M13A, treat it with anti-corrosion wax immediately.
