Suzuki Grand Vitara II (JT) (2005 – 2015)

Reliability score : 6.8/10

The second-generation Suzuki Grand Vitara (code name JT) marked a turning point for the Japanese manufacturer. It abandoned the separate ladder frame for a unibody structure integrating a ladder subframe, offering a better compromise between road handling and off-road capabilities. Unlike most compact SUVs of its era, it retained a true permanent 4x4 transmission with a central differential lock and a low-range transfer case, making it an excellent off-roader. Restyled in 2008 (integration of turn signals into the mirrors, new engines) and again in 2012 (new grille), it was very popular in Europe with its 1.9 DDiS diesel engine (of Renault origin), although the latter is the main source of its reliability issues.

🎯 Verdict

The Suzuki Grand Vitara II is a paradoxical vehicle. It is one of the last true compact 4x4s, offering exceptional off-road capabilities thanks to its low-range gearbox. However, the 1.9 DDiS engine, which represents the overwhelming majority of the European market, is its Achilles' heel. DPF, EGR, and turbo failures are frequent if the vehicle is used in the city. Verdict: If you are looking for a reliable vehicle for mixed daily use, opt for a petrol model (2.0L or 2.4L post-2010), even if it means accepting high fuel consumption. The 1.9 DDiS should only be purchased with full knowledge of its issues, with a clear service history, and strictly for road, rural, or towing use.
