Suzuki Alto VI (2002 – 2008)

Reliability score : 8.5/10

The Suzuki Alto sold between 2002 and 2008 represents a complex chapter in Suzuki's global strategy. In Europe, this model was actually imported from India (built by Maruti Suzuki) and was based on the older 5th-generation Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Alto platform. Meanwhile, Japan received the true 6th-generation Alto (chassis HA24) from 2004 to 2009. Regardless of the market, the Alto is the quintessential budget city car. It offers no-frills, ultra-low-cost motoring. While its mechanical simplicity makes the engines incredibly robust, the car suffers from extreme cost-cutting: poor sound insulation, basic interior plastics, a lack of modern safety features, and a high susceptibility to rust. It is a purely rational A-to-B vehicle.

🎯 Verdict

The 2002-2008 Suzuki Alto is a pure appliance. Mechanically, it is incredibly resilient and will run forever on a shoestring budget. However, its fatal flaw in wetter climates (like Europe) is rust. The poor safety rating and lack of refinement mean it should only be considered as a cheap, secondary city runabout. If you are buying one, prioritize a rust-free chassis over low mileage. Avoid it entirely if your commute involves heavy highway driving.
