The third-generation Subaru Crosstrek (GU), launched for the 2024 model year, globally replaces the 'XV' nameplate (previously used in Europe and Asia). Based on a stiffened version (+10%) of the SGP (Subaru Global Platform), it retains what makes the brand successful: standard permanent Symmetrical AWD and an excellent ground clearance of 22 cm (8.7 inches). In Europe, it focuses exclusively on the 2.0 e-Boxer mild hybrid engine, reworked to meet emission standards (power reduced to 136 hp). Although very recent, it inherits the excellent reliability track record of the previous generation, with a particularly high resale value and above-average off-road capabilities for the compact SUV segment.
The third-generation Subaru Crosstrek (GU) is a sensible choice for drivers operating in mountainous, snowy, or rural regions. Its AWD and ground clearance make it a true Swiss Army knife, much more capable off-road than 95% of its competitors. Regarding the e-Boxer hybrid engine (Europe): It shines with its smoothness and reliability (the system is proven), but disappoints with its modest performance and fuel consumption that remains that of a conventional combustion engine. It is a vehicle to be driven smoothly. If you reside in North America, the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine is by far the best choice in the lineup. Despite a few minor early production recalls (typical for a new generation), overall reliability promises to be excellent, right in line with previous generations.
