Subaru Crosstrek I (GP/GJ) (2012 – 2017)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The first-generation Subaru Crosstrek (known as the Subaru XV in Europe and other markets) is a compact SUV based on the Impreza platform (GP/GJ generation). It stands out with its standard Symmetrical AWD and generous ground clearance of 22 cm (8.7 inches), giving it real off-road capabilities. Focus on the Hybrid version: Introduced in 2014 (mainly in North America and Japan), this version pairs the 2.0L Boxer engine with a small 13.4 hp electric motor integrated into the CVT gearbox, powered by a 0.6 kWh NiMH battery. It is a mild-hybrid system aimed at slightly reducing urban fuel consumption. Although technically interesting, this version offers only marginal fuel savings compared to the standard combustion model, while adding weight and technical complexity that now weigh on its used

🎯 Verdict

The first-generation Subaru Crosstrek (XV) is an excellent choice for those who truly need permanent AWD and high ground clearance. Regarding the Hybrid version: It is to be AVOIDED or heavily negotiated. The extra cost at purchase and the risk of having to replace the aging NiMH battery completely cancel out the very meager fuel savings achieved. The best choice: Opt for a standard 2.0L petrol (FB20) model, preferably from the 2016 model year onwards to escape the piston ring problems (excessive oil consumption). If you buy a 2013-2015 model, demand proof that the oil problem was handled under warranty or check the level obsessively.
