The first-generation Subaru Crosstrek (known as the Subaru XV in Europe and other international markets) is a compact crossover based on the Impreza hatchback platform. It stands out with its raised ground clearance (22 cm / 8.7 inches), its rugged look with raw plastic cladding, and its symmetrical all-wheel drive (Symmetrical AWD) as standard in almost all markets. This model has met with immense success, particularly in North America (California, Pacific Northwest) and mountainous regions, thanks to its versatility and real capabilities on snow and dirt roads. Although praised for its overall robustness and excellent resale value, it has often been criticized for its slightly underpowered engines and cabin soundproofing. The first-generation Subaru Crosstrek (XV) is a utility vehicle in the noble sense of the term: robust, practical, and unbeatable in precarious grip conditions. Its AWD system is superior to almost all of its direct competitors. However, buying a used model requires vigilance. The 2.0L petrol models produced between 2012 and 2015 present a proven risk of excessive oil consumption (piston ring defect). It is therefore strongly advised to target the facelifted models (2016-2017), which benefit from a more reliable engine, better soundproofing, and a modernized cabin. The diesel (in Europe) should be strictly reserved for high-mileage drivers to avoid DPF/FAP and EGR problems.
