Subaru Ascent I (SK) (2019 – 2025)

Reliability score : 7.4/10

The Subaru Ascent (SK generation) is the largest SUV ever produced by the Japanese brand, designed specifically for the North American market to succeed the Tribeca. This 3-row family SUV (offering 7 or 8 seats) stands out for its generous roominess, its standard Symmetrical AWD, and the introduction of the 2.4L turbocharged flat-4 engine (FA24F). While the early model years (2019-2020) suffered from numerous teething problems (oil consumption, electronic and structural recalls), build quality and reliability have seen a clear improvement from 2021 onwards. It positions itself as a robust and safe alternative to the segment leaders, although its initial reliability falls short of some Japanese competitors.

✅ Strengths

⚠️ Weaknesses

🎯 Verdict

The Subaru Ascent is an extremely capable, safe, and practical family SUV. However, its reliability record is split in two. The 2019 and 2020 models suffered from serious teething problems (oil consumption, transmission issues, cascading structural and electronic recalls). From 2021 onwards, Subaru corrected the course, offering a vehicle whose reliability matches the segment average. Buying advice: Avoid the 2019-2020 model years if possible, or demand a crystal-clear maintenance history proving that all recalls (especially TCU, fuel pump, and PCV valve) have been performed. Favor a 2021 or later model. Do not forget to budget for the timing belt replacement at 100,000 km.
