Skoda Octavia III (2012 – 2020)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The third-generation Skoda Octavia (Typ 5E) is based on the Volkswagen group's renowned MQB modular platform. A true best-seller, it positions itself at the boundary between compacts and family cars thanks to its record-breaking cabin space and gigantic trunk (590 to 610 liters). The 2017 facelift introduced a controversial front end with dual headlights, but more importantly, updated the infotainment and driving aids. Mechanically, this generation marks a major turning point for gasoline engine reliability: the abandonment of problematic timing chains (EA111/EA888 Gen 2) in favor of robust toothed belts (EA211) and a third generation of 1.8/2.0 TSI engines (EA888 Gen 3) that are largely made reliable. It's an extremely rational used car choice, provided you choose the right transmission.

🎯 Verdict

The Skoda Octavia III is one of the smartest used car purchases on the market. For gasoline engines, the EA211 family engines (1.2, 1.4, 1.5 TSI) have erased the serious reliability problems of the previous generation. The 1.4 TSI 150 hp with a manual gearbox represents the perfect compromise. The weak point remains the DSG7 automatic gearbox (DQ200) associated with engines under 2.0L: it requires a rigorous test drive before purchase. The RS versions (2.0 TSI) are excellent sporty family cars, very reliable. Buy with confidence with a manual gearbox, with caution for the dry-clutch DSG7 gearbox.
