Skoda Fabia III (NJ) (2014 – 2021)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The Skoda Fabia III (NJ generation) marks a pragmatic turning point for the Czech manufacturer. Based on a hybrid platform (a mix of the old PQ26 and elements of the modern MQB), it offers one of the best space-to-footprint ratios in its category, especially in the estate (Combi) version. Diesel Focus: Under the hood, diesel was exclusively represented by the 1.4 TDI (EA288), a 3-cylinder unit replacing the older 1.2 TDI and 1.6 TDI. Although very economical, this engine proved to be rough, noisy, and unsuitable for short urban trips. Faced with the WLTP standard and falling demand, Skoda simply removed diesel from the range during the 2018 facelift, making the Fabia III phase 2 a 100% gasoline model. Overall, the Fabia III is a reliable car, but diesel versions require a clear service his

🎯 Verdict

The Skoda Fabia III is an excellent rational choice, but the 1.4 TDI diesel version calls for caution. If you are a high-mileage driver looking for a utility vehicle or an economical estate (Combi) to cover many kilometers, the 1.4 TDI will do the job with exemplary fuel efficiency. However, its lack of refinement (noise, vibrations) and its vulnerability to clogging in the city make it unsuitable for 80% of city car drivers. For mixed or urban use, absolutely prioritize the gasoline engines (1.2 TSI or 1.0 TSI), which are much more pleasant and reliable in the long term. Also, be careful with models equipped with the DSG7 gearbox, whose history must be impeccable.
