The Seat Leon IV (KL), launched in 2020, represents the fourth generation of the Spanish brand's popular compact hatchback and estate (Sportstourer). Built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB Evo platform—shared with the VW Golf VIII, Skoda Octavia IV, and Audi A3 8Y—it offers a sharper, more dynamic driving experience than its siblings while maintaining excellent practicality. While mechanically robust, the Leon IV's launch was heavily marred by severe software issues related to the new MIB3 infotainment system and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Early models (2020-2021) suffered from freezing screens, reboot loops, and erroneous SOS eCall warnings. Subsequent Over-The-Air (OTA) and dealership updates have largely stabilized the system, making 2022+ models significantly more reliable
The Seat Leon IV (KL) is fundamentally a brilliant compact car, offering arguably the best balance of style, driving dynamics, and practicality on the MQB Evo platform. Mechanically, the engines (especially the 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TDI) are highly reliable and efficient. However, its reputation is severely tarnished by the VAG Group's rushed MIB3 software. Buying Advice: If you are looking at a 2020 or 2021 model, proceed with extreme caution. Demand proof that all software updates and recalls have been applied, and test the infotainment and Travel Assist thoroughly. Models produced from late 2022 onwards are significantly more stable and represent a highly recommended purchase. The 1.5 TSI (Manual or eTSI) is the sweet spot of the range.
