The first-generation Seat Arona (phase 1, type KJ) is the Spanish brand's first urban SUV. Based on the excellent Volkswagen Group MQB-A0 modular platform (shared with the Seat Ibiza, VW Polo, and Skoda Kamiq), it stands out for its dynamic road handling, assertive design, and excellent space-to-footprint ratio. Positioned as a sportier alternative to the VW T-Cross, it nevertheless suffers from an interior finish below category standards (hard plastics omnipresent before the 2021 facelift). In terms of reliability, the Arona benefits from proven powertrains, with a logical dominance of TSI petrol engines, particularly well-suited to its size. Overall generation rating: 8/10.
The first-generation Seat Arona (phase 1) is a highly recommendable purchase on the used car market, provided you target the right versions. The 1.0 TSI (95 or 115 hp) engines with manual gearbox represent the safest and most balanced choice, offering excellent reliability and controlled maintenance costs. The 1.5 TSI 150 hp is appealing but requires checking the update history (cold jerking). Diesel versions (1.6 TDI) are to be avoided except for very high mileage drivers, due to the risk of clogging. Finally, the DSG7 automatic gearbox offers real comfort but requires increased vigilance during the test drive, as its longevity in urban environments remains its weak point.
