The Renault Scénic III (codename JZ) marks a major turning point for the French manufacturer. After a Scénic II with catastrophic reliability, this third generation was designed with drastically improved quality standards. Available in a short version (5 seats) and Grand Scénic (5 or 7 seats), it underwent two facelifts (Phase 2 in 2012, Phase 3 in 2013). It stands out for its excellent modularity (independent and removable rear seats), its ride comfort, and its very sound road handling. In terms of reliability, it is an overall very robust vehicle, with the notable exception of the 1.2 TCe (H5F) petrol engine, which suffers from major design flaws. The diesel engines, which represent the vast majority of sales, reached full maturity in this generation.
The Renault Scénic III is an excellent deal on the used car market, provided you choose the right engine. It has erased the electronic and mechanical flaws of its predecessor to become one of the most reliable minivans of its generation. Families looking for a spacious and comfortable vehicle should confidently opt for the diesel versions (1.5 dCi 110 for economy, 1.6 dCi 130 for versatility, or the indestructible 2.0 dCi for high-mileage drivers). For petrol, the old 1.6 16v is a pragmatic choice. However, absolutely avoid the 1.2 TCe, a real financial time bomb.
