The Renault Scenic III (JZ), including the extended Grand Scenic III, represents a massive leap forward in build quality and reliability compared to its predecessor, the notoriously problematic Scenic II. Built on the Megane III platform, it offers excellent ride comfort, outstanding modularity (individual removable rear seats), and a vast array of family-friendly features. The model underwent two facelifts: Phase 2 in 2012 (revised front fascia, introduction of 'Energy' engines) and Phase 3 in 2013 (adoption of the new Renault brand identity with a larger logo and the R-Link infotainment system). While the chassis and electronics are generally robust, the engine lineup is a mixed bag, ranging from bulletproof diesels (2.0 dCi) to catastrophic petrol engines (1.2 TCe).
The Renault Scenic III is an excellent family hauler that successfully erased the disastrous reputation of the Scenic II. Its chassis, interior, and electronics are generally very solid. However, your ownership experience will depend entirely on the engine you choose. BUY: 1.6 dCi 130, 2.0 dCi 150/160, or the simple 1.6 16v petrol. These are incredibly robust and will serve you well. NEGOTIATE: 1.5 dCi (ensure DPF is healthy) or 2.0 16v CVT (ensure gearbox fluid was changed). AVOID: The 1.2 TCe is a ticking time bomb with fatal design flaws. The 1.4 TCe is also risky due to head gasket issues.
