Renault Scenic II (JM) (2003 – 2009)

Reliability score : 5.2/10

The Renault Scenic II (JM) revolutionized the compact MPV segment with its bold styling, exceptional modularity, and cutting-edge technology for its time. Available in standard (5-seater) and Grand Scenic (5 or 7-seater) versions, it offered unmatched family practicality. However, its reputation was severely tarnished by catastrophic reliability issues during its early years (Phase 1: 2003-2005), particularly concerning its diesel engines and electronic systems (multiplexing). The Phase 2 facelift (introduced in late 2006) brought significant quality improvements and introduced the highly reliable 2.0 dCi engine. While early models are best avoided, late-production models can represent excellent value for money if chosen with the right powertrain.

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Scenic II is a vehicle of two extremes. If you buy a 2003-2005 diesel model (especially the 1.9 dCi 120hp or early 1.5 dCi), you are exposing yourself to catastrophic engine and electronic failures. However, if you focus strictly on Phase 2 models (late 2006-2009) equipped with the robust 2.0 dCi 150hp or any of the petrol engines, it becomes an incredibly practical, comfortable, and affordable family car. Thoroughly check the electronics (dashboard, windows, parking brake) and ensure the scuttle drains are clear before purchasing.
