Renault Scenic II (JM) (2003 – 2009)

Reliability score : 5.5/10

The Renault Scénic II (codename JM) marked a stylistic break from its predecessor, adopting the angular design of the Mégane II. Available in a short version (5 seats) and, for the first time, in a long 'Grand Scénic' version (5 or 7 seats), it redefined the standards of modularity and comfort in the compact MPV segment. However, its career was heavily marred by catastrophic reliability problems on Phase 1 models (2003-2006), particularly affecting electronics and diesel engines (1.9 dCi 120 and 1.5 dCi). The autumn 2006 facelift (Phase 2) corrected the vast majority of these defects, making late-career models significantly more recommendable. Today, it is a very affordable used vehicle, but one that requires rigorous selection of the engine and production year.

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Scénic II is a vehicle with two faces. Phase 1 models (2003 - mid-2006), particularly the 1.9 dCi 120 and 1.5 dCi 80/100 diesels, are veritable nests of financial woes and should be strictly avoided. However, if you target a Phase 2 (from late 2006 onwards), the assessment changes radically. A Scénic II Phase 2 equipped with the robust 2.0 dCi 150hp or a petrol engine (1.6 16v or 2.0 16v) is today an excellent used car deal: it offers royal comfort, unbeatable modularity, and high-level safety for a negligible budget. The purchase is therefore conditional on a drastic selection of the year, engine, and verification of known weak points (dashboard, water ingress).
