The Renault Scenic I (initially launched as the 'Mégane Scénic') is a historically significant vehicle, widely credited with inventing the European compact MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) segment. Based on the Mégane I platform, it offered unparalleled interior modularity, elevated seating, and numerous storage compartments in a compact footprint. Generations & Updates: * Phase 1 (1996–1999): Launched with 8-valve petrol engines and indirect injection diesels. Characterized by its softer, rounded front fascia. * Phase 2 (1999–2003): A major facelift. The 'Mégane' prefix was dropped. It received larger, clear-lens headlights, upgraded interior materials, and a shift to modern 16-valve petrol engines and direct-injection (dTi/dCi) diesels. * Scenic RX4 (2000–2003): A rugged, raised 4x4 variant d
The Renault Scenic I is a brilliant piece of packaging that suffers from the typical cost-cutting and electrical fragility of early-2000s Renaults. Today, it should only be considered as a budget utility vehicle. Buy: A well-maintained Phase 2 petrol (1.6 16v) where the ignition coils and timing belt have been recently replaced. The 8-valve Phase 1 petrols are also incredibly tough if you don't mind the dated looks and slow pace. Avoid: The 1.9 dCi at all costs unless it comes with a massive folder of receipts (turbo, EGR, injectors). Also avoid any model showing signs of electrical erraticism (dashboard lighting up like a Christmas tree) or damp carpets, as UCH replacement exceeds the car's value.
