Renault Scenic I (JA) (1996 – 2003)

Reliability score : 6.2/10

The Renault Scénic I (named « Mégane Scénic » during its Phase 1 from 1996 to 1999) is a historic model that invented the compact MPV segment in Europe. Voted Car of the Year in 1997, it is based on the Mégane I platform. Its major asset lies in its exceptional modularity for its time, with three individual, removable, and sliding rear seats, all within a size of 4.17 m. The 1999 facelift (Phase 2) modernized the front end, improved the finish, introduced 16-valve engines, and the name simply became « Scénic ». In 2000, an all-wheel drive adventurer version, the Scénic RX4, appeared. In terms of reliability, the assessment is very mixed: while petrol engines (especially 8-valve) and older diesels are mechanically robust, the introduction of the 1.9 dCi was marked by serious failures. 🎯 Verdict

Today, buying a Renault Scénic I is a utility purchase at a very low price. While its modularity concept remains brilliant, its advanced age makes the electronics very temperamental (the immobilizer is a major cause of scrapping). Absolutely avoid the 1.9 dCi, a real financial black hole, and be wary of the 1.9 dTi if the timing belt isn't recent. The best choice lies in the petrol engines (1.6e 90hp in Phase 1, or 1.6 16v 107hp in Phase 2), provided that the ignition coils have been replaced. The Scénic RX4 is a future collector's item, but its specific 4x4 maintenance is ruinous.
