The Renault Safrane Phase 2 (B54), launched in July 1996, marked the maturation of the diamond brand's flagship. After a Phase 1 (1992-1996) marred by serious electronic reliability and finish issues, this Phase 2 spectacularly corrected the course. Aesthetically modernized (new grille, redesigned rear lights), it particularly shines with a total overhaul of its petrol engine range, abandoning old Renault blocks in favor of excellent modular Volvo-sourced engines (4 and 5 cylinders). Ride comfort, spaciousness, and sound insulation remain top-notch, worthy of the E-segment. Today, it's a choice youngtimer, particularly in its high trims (Initiale Paris), although the scarcity of spare parts (NFP) requires a thoughtful purchase.
The Renault Safrane Phase 2 is an excellent road car that managed to erase the flaws of its predecessor. For a collector's purchase or an unconventional daily driver, the top choice is the 2.5 20v (N7U), ideally with a manual gearbox, which offers driving pleasure and reliability worthy of the best Swedish productions. The 2.0 16v is a very rational economic alternative. However, the 2.2 dT should be avoided due to its chronic fragility, and V6 versions require a significant maintenance budget (timing belt, automatic gearbox). The main challenge today is no longer the car's intrinsic reliability, but the scarcity of specific spare parts.
