Renault Modus I phase 2 (JP0) (2008 – 2012)

Reliability score : 8.4/10

The first-generation Renault Modus underwent a major facelift in 2008 (Phase 2, code JP0). This facelift not only modernized its front and rear, but also introduced the Grand Modus variant (+16 cm wheelbase and overhang). This extended version corrects the main flaw of Phase 1: a tiny boot. Based on the excellent Clio III platform, the Modus Phase 2 is an extremely practical urban mini-MPV, featuring a sliding rear bench seat and very sound road handling. In terms of reliability, Phase 2 reached maturity, correcting most of the early defects (electronics, diesel injection) of Phase 1. With petrol engines, it shines with its robustness, avoiding problematic engines that appeared later in the Renault range.

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Modus Phase 2 (and particularly the Grand Modus) is an excellent used car purchase, often undervalued due to its divisive design. With a petrol engine, it is an extremely reliable vehicle. The 1.2 TCe 100 hp (D4Ft) engine is the gem of the range: it offers the pleasure of a larger engine while maintaining flawless reliability (not to be confused with the 1.2 TCe H5F of subsequent generations). The 1.2 16v 75 hp is perfect for the city but will lack power on the motorway. Avoid the 1.6 16v versions equipped with the 4-speed automatic gearbox, a source of costly breakdowns. Diesels are decent but only make sense if you drive a lot outside urban areas.
