The Renault Modus Phase 2 (internal code JP0) was introduced in early 2008 to address the main criticism of the original 2004 model: a severe lack of boot space. Renault launched the 'Grand Modus', extended by 16 cm, alongside the standard short-wheelbase Modus. Built on the robust Clio III (B-Platform), the Phase 2 benefits from significantly improved build quality and electrical reliability compared to the early Phase 1 models. As an independent expert, I consider the Phase 2 Modus/Grand Modus to be a highly rational, practical, and surprisingly reliable used car purchase, provided the correct engine is chosen. The diesel engines (1.5 dCi), which had a catastrophic reputation in the early 2000s, were largely cured of their major flaws (Delphi pump failures, connecting rod bearings) by th
The Renault Modus Phase 2 is a highly underrated used car. Because of the poor reputation of the Phase 1 (due to electrical gremlins and early dCi engine failures), the Phase 2 suffers from heavy depreciation, making it a bargain. If you are looking for a diesel, the 1.5 dCi 85 hp (pre-DPF) or the 1.5 dCi 90 hp (with DPF) are the sweet spots, offering incredible fuel economy and proven reliability. However, do not buy the diesel if you only drive in the city; the EGR and DPF will clog, leading to expensive repairs. For urban users, the 1.2 16v or 1.2 TCe petrols are the only sensible choices. Avoid the 1.6 16v automatic due to the fragile DP0 gearbox.
