Renault Modus I (JP0) (2004 – 2008)

Reliability score : 7.0/10

The first-generation Renault Modus (Phase 1, internal code JP0) is an urban mini-MPV based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's B platform (shared with the Clio III and Nissan Micra). Designed to offer maximum interior space in an ultra-compact format (3.79 m), it stands out with its 'Triptic' sliding rear bench seat and excellent passive safety (5 Euro NCAP stars). While its petrol engines (our focus here) are generally robust and suited to its urban and peri-urban vocation, the model suffered from disastrous mechanical accessibility (replacing a headlight bulb requires removing the front bumper) and recurring electronic failures typical of Renaults from the mid-2000s. Phase 1 ended in early 2008 with the arrival of the facelift and the extended Grand Modus version.

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Modus Phase 1 is an excellent used city car, provided you choose the right engine. Petrol versions are largely preferable: the 1.2 16v is indestructible and perfect for the city, while the 1.2 TCe offers surprising versatility. The 1.4 and 1.6 16v are good for longer drives but require rigorous monitoring of the timing belt and coils. Absolutely avoid dCi diesels under 100 hp from before 2007. When buying, be uncompromising about the functioning of the electronics (windows, power steering) and ensure that routine maintenance (bulbs, timing belt) won't immediately fall on you, given the labor costs associated with its cramped design.
