Renault Modus I (JP0) (2004 – 2008)

Reliability score : 6.0/10

The Renault Modus Generation I (Project JP0, Phase 1) is a B-segment mini MPV built on the Renault-Nissan B platform, shared with the Clio III. Introduced to offer the practicality of the larger Scénic in a compact, city-friendly footprint, it features a highly modular interior, notably the 'Triptic' sliding rear bench. While it achieved an impressive 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating and offers excellent ride comfort, its extremely cramped engine bay makes routine maintenance—such as replacing headlight bulbs—notoriously difficult and expensive. This sheet focuses heavily on the ubiquitous 1.5 dCi diesel engines, which present significant reliability disparities depending on the exact version and injection system used.

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Modus I is a brilliantly packaged mini MPV, but its early diesel engines are a reliability minefield. If you are specifically looking for a diesel, avoid the 65 hp and 80 hp 1.5 dCi at all costs due to the Delphi pump metal shaving issue, which costs more to fix than the car is worth. The 106 hp version is much better to drive and has a reliable injection system, but you MUST ensure the connecting rod bearings have been replaced. Given the car's age and urban vocation, a petrol model (especially the 1.2 TCe or 1.4 16v) is a vastly safer and more logical purchase today than any of the diesels.
