The Renault Modus I (JP0) is a B-segment mini MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) introduced in 2004. Built on the Renault-Nissan B platform (shared with the Clio III and Nissan Note), it was designed to offer the practicality of a Scenic in a much smaller footprint. Its standout features included the innovative 'Triptic' sliding rear bench, excellent all-around visibility, and a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, which was exceptional for its size at the time. However, the Modus is infamous among mechanics and owners for its packaging: routine maintenance, such as changing a headlight bulb, officially requires the removal of the front bumper. While petrol variants are generally robust, early diesel models suffered from catastrophic injection system failures. The model received a major facelift in 20
The Renault Modus I is a brilliantly packaged urban vehicle that suffers from the typical mid-2000s Renault reliability woes. If you are looking for a cheap, practical city car, it can be a great buy provided you choose the right engine. The petrol engines (especially the 1.2 16v and 1.2 TCe) are highly recommended and generally reliable, though you must budget for the inevitable hassle of changing headlight bulbs. Avoid the early 1.5 dCi (65/68/80/86 hp) engines at all costs unless you have absolute proof that the entire injection system has been replaced, as the Delphi pump failure will cost more to fix than the car is worth. Negotiate firmly based on electrical functionality and timing belt history.
