Renault Koleos II (HZG) (2016 – 2023)

Reliability score : 7.8/10

The Renault Koleos II (Internal code: HZG) is a D-segment mid-size SUV built on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance CMF-CD platform, sharing much of its underpinnings with the Nissan X-Trail (T32). Unlike its 7-seater rivals (and the X-Trail), Renault opted to make the Koleos a strict 5-seater, prioritizing exceptional rear legroom and a premium, comfortable cabin. Manufactured primarily in Busan, South Korea (where it is sold as the Renault Samsung QM6) and Wuhan, China, the Koleos II represents a massive leap in design and perceived quality over its predecessor. It received a mid-life facelift (Phase 2) in 2019, introducing updated styling, better sound insulation, an upgraded R-Link 2 infotainment system, and a new range of 'Blue dCi' diesel engines to meet stricter Euro 6d-Temp emis

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Koleos II is an underrated, highly comfortable cruiser that offers excellent value on the used market due to steep depreciation. If you are looking for a diesel, the pre-2019 2.0 dCi 175 is the absolute sweet spot: it avoids the fragile AdBlue systems of the later 'Blue dCi' engines while offering bulletproof mechanical reliability. If you must buy a newer model (2019+), be prepared for potential AdBlue tank replacements on the diesels, or opt for the surprisingly capable 1.3 TCe 160 petrol. Regardless of the engine, if the car is equipped with the X-Tronic CVT, you must ensure the transmission fluid has been changed every 60,000 km, despite Renault's official 'sealed for life' stance. Avoid the 1.7 Blue dCi unless it comes with a comprehensive warranty.
