The Renault Koleos I (HY0) marks Renault's first genuine foray into the compact crossover SUV segment. Developed in close collaboration with Nissan, it utilizes the robust C-platform and the proven 'All-Mode 4x4-i' drivetrain from the Nissan X-Trail (T31). Manufactured by Renault Samsung Motors in South Korea (where it was sold as the Samsung QM5), the Koleos prioritizes ride comfort, acoustic insulation, and off-road capability over sporty handling. While its initial exterior design (Phase 1, 2008-2011) was highly polarizing and hindered its sales in Europe, subsequent facelifts (Phase 2 in 2011, Phase 3 in 2013) significantly improved its front fascia. Today, it represents an excellent bargain on the used market, primarily because it is powered by one of the most reliable diesel engines
The Renault Koleos I is a highly underrated SUV. Because its styling didn't resonate with European buyers, it suffers from steep depreciation, making it a hidden gem on the used market. If you are looking for a reliable, comfortable, and capable tow vehicle or winter commuter, a well-maintained 2.0 dCi (150 or 175 hp) is an outstanding choice. The engine is virtually bulletproof provided it gets regular oil changes and isn't restricted to short city trips. Avoid the petrol versions unless you drive very few miles, as their fuel consumption is prohibitively high. Prioritize Phase 2 (2011+) or Phase 3 (2013+) models for better aesthetics and sorted suspension components.
