The first-generation Renault Koleos (code HY0) is a product of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Manufactured in South Korea by Renault Samsung Motors (where it is sold as the Samsung QM5), it is based on the Alliance's C platform, shared with the Nissan X-Trail (T31). While it suffered from a polarizing design at its launch (Phase 1), it benefited from two facelifts (Phase 2 in 2011, Phase 3 in 2013) that softened its lines. Positioned as a compact family SUV, it stands out for its ride comfort, sound insulation, and, above all, mechanical reliability far superior to the brand's average at that time, thanks to the excellent 2.0 dCi (M9R) engine and Nissan transmission components. Today, it is a pragmatic and very affordable choice on the used market.
The Renault Koleos I is often considered the 'ugly duckling' of the Renault range in the 2010s due to its styling. Paradoxically, this is what makes it an excellent used car bargain. Beneath its controversial exterior lie the excellent underpinnings of the Nissan X-Trail and the very robust 2.0 dCi (M9R) engine with a timing chain, which has largely erased the woes of the older 1.9 dCi. If you are looking for a comfortable, reliable family SUV, capable off-road (in 4x4 version) and inexpensive, this is an extremely pragmatic choice. Prioritize Phase 2 or 3 versions (after 2011) for modernized styling and improved finish.
