The Renault Grand Modus (Generation I, Phase 2 - JP0) was introduced in early 2008 alongside the facelift of the standard Modus. Designed to address the main criticism of the original Modus—its lack of boot space—the Grand Modus features a wheelbase extended by 93 mm and an overall length increased by 160 mm. This transforms it into a highly practical mini-MPV (B-segment), offering up to 410 liters of cargo capacity and excellent rear legroom thanks to its sliding rear bench. Built on the proven Renault-Nissan B platform (shared with the Clio III), it offers a comfortable ride, excellent visibility, and a high driving position. While its styling is subjective, its reliability—particularly with petrol engines—is generally very solid, making it an excellent, budget-friendly used buy today.
The Renault Grand Modus is an underrated gem in the used car market for those prioritizing practicality, comfort, and low running costs over driving dynamics. For petrol buyers: The 1.2 TCe (100 hp) is the absolute sweet spot, offering enough power for highway driving while remaining reliable and economical. The 1.2 16v (75 hp) is bulletproof but strictly for city use. Avoid the 1.6 16v if it is paired with the automatic gearbox (DP0) unless you have proof that the gearbox solenoids have been recently replaced. For diesel buyers: Only consider the 1.5 dCi if you do significant annual mileage outside the city. Ensure the oil has been changed frequently (every 15k km max) to avoid the dreaded connecting rod bearing failure, particularly on the 105 hp version.
