The Renault Fluence (L30) is a compact three-box sedan based on the Mégane III platform, but with an extended wheelbase. Initially designed for emerging markets, Eastern Europe, Turkey, and South America (where sedans with boots are popular), it was also marketed in Western Europe. It stands out for its generous interior space, suspension comfort, and immense 530-liter boot. The facelift (Phase 2) that occurred in late 2012 / early 2013 gave it Renault's new visual identity (large diamond logo on a black grille). Although its interior finish is a step below the Mégane III (harder plastics), it proves to be a pragmatic and economical choice on the used market, particularly with its fully mature diesel (dCi) engines.
The Renault Fluence is the quintessential rational choice. Shunned in Western Europe for its sedan body style, it nevertheless offers first-rate family performance for a ridiculously low price on the used market. For diesel, it's an excellent choice: the 1.5 dCi (especially the 110 hp manual) and the 1.6 dCi 130 hp are reliable, economical engines perfectly suited to the car's size. However, it is necessary to AVOID the first-generation EDC automatic gearbox, which is a source of significant costs, and to steer clear of the Z.E. electric version, whose battery technology is completely obsolete. Opt for a Phase 2 (after 2013) with a manual gearbox for a worry-free purchase.
