Renault Espace IV (J81) (2002 – 2015)

Reliability score : 6.2/10

The Renault Espace IV (J81) marks a historical break for the model: it abandons Matra's composite bodywork for a classic steel structure, manufactured directly by Renault in Sandouville. Based on the Laguna II platform, it offers imperial comfort, exceptional modularity (seats on rails), and high-level passive safety (5 EuroNCAP stars). However, its career is split into two diametrically opposed realities in terms of reliability. Phase 1 (2002-2006) was an industrial disaster (fickle electronics, catastrophic 1.9, 2.2, and 3.0 dCi diesel engines). From Phase 2 (2006) and the introduction of the chain-driven 2.0 dCi (M9R) engine, the Espace IV became a highly recommendable and robust vehicle, continuing its career until 2015 through Phases 3 (2010) and 4 (2012).

🎯 Verdict

Buying a Renault Espace IV is a double-edged sword. If you opt for a Phase 1 (2002-2005) diesel (1.9, 2.2, or 3.0 dCi), you expose yourself to certain financial ruin, as these engines are among the least reliable in modern automotive history. On the other hand, if you target a Phase 2, 3, or 4 (post-2006) equipped with the brilliant 2.0 dCi (130, 150, or 175 hp) or a petrol engine (2.0T), the Espace IV becomes a golden opportunity. It then offers unparalleled family performance, royal comfort, and excellent reliability for a used market price often undervalued due to the poor reputation of the early vintages. Buy a well-maintained 2.0 dCi with your eyes closed, flee the other diesels.
