The Renault Espace IV (J81) marks a historic turning point for the model: it abandons the composite bodywork on a galvanized chassis (Matra heritage) for a classic steel structure, manufactured in Sandouville. This change allowed it to achieve 5 stars in the EuroNCAP crash test, a first for a large MPV. However, the Espace IV is notoriously famous for its catastrophic reliability during its first years of commercialization (Phase 1: 2002-2006), plagued by electronic failures (multiplexing) and recurring engine breakdowns on the 1.9 dCi, 2.2 dCi, and 3.0 V6 dCi diesels. The 2006 facelift (Phase 2) saved the model thanks to a complete overhaul of the electronics and, above all, the introduction of the 2.0 dCi (M9R) engine with a timing chain, which proved to be exceptionally robust. Phases 3
The Renault Espace IV is a two-faced vehicle, a textbook case. Phase 1 (2002-2005) models, particularly with 1.9 dCi, 2.2 dCi, and 3.0 dCi engines, are true money pits and should be avoided at all costs. However, from the 2006 facelift (Phase 2 and later), Renault corrected the course. Equipped with the 2.0 dCi (130, 150 or 175 hp) engine or the 2.0 Turbo petrol, the Espace IV becomes an exceptional family MPV, reliable, ultra-comfortable, and very affordable on the used market. Prioritize a model from after 2010 (Phase 3 or 4) with a clear service history for a worry-free purchase.
