The Renault Espace IV is a vehicle of two extremes. If you buy a Phase 1 (2002-2005) with a 1.9 dCi, 2.2 dCi, or 3.0 dCi, you are almost guaranteed a financial nightmare due to engine and electronic failures. However, if you target a Phase 2, 3, or 4 (2006-2015) equipped with the brilliant 2.0 dCi or any of the petrol engines, it remains one of the most comfortable, spacious, and practical family vehicles ever made. Rule of thumb: Post-2006 only, and strictly avoid the 1.9, 2.2, and 3.0 diesels.
