Renault Espace I (J11) (1984 – 1991)

Reliability score : 7.5/10

The Espace I (codename J11) is a historic vehicle: it is the pioneer of the minivan segment in Europe. Designed and produced by Matra for Renault, it stands out for its innovative design: bodywork made of fiberglass and polyester panels bonded to a galvanized steel chassis. This architecture makes it impervious to rust on its exterior panels and relatively light. Launched in 1984, it had very timid commercial beginnings before becoming a huge success. It benefited from a facelift (Phase 2) in 1988, modernizing its front end (slanted headlights, integrated grille) and improving interior finish quality. Today, it is a collector's vehicle (youngtimer) prized for its revolutionary modularity (swiveling, removable seats) and its immense glass surface.

🎯 Verdict

Buying a Renault Espace I today is a matter of collecting (Youngtimer) rather than buying a classic used vehicle. The 2.1 Turbo D (J8S) engine is the sensible choice for high-mileage drivers or those who want the most indestructible mechanics in the range, provided the cooling system has been maintained. It's an agricultural but tireless engine. Absolutely prioritize a Phase 2 (1988-1991), which is better finished and electrically more reliable. The biggest challenge will not be the mechanics (engine parts are easily found), but the preservation of the interior and tracking down electrical failures. Avoid models with fractured fiberglass bodywork or ruined interiors, as specific parts are unobtainable.
