The Renault Clio III marked a significant turning point for the French manufacturer, transitioning the Clio from a simple city car to a versatile, almost compact-class vehicle. It was the first car in the B-segment to achieve a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Offering a massive leap in interior quality, soundproofing, and ride comfort compared to the Clio II, it was available in 3-door, 5-door, and an Estate version (Grandtour/Estate). The model underwent a major facelift in 2009 (Phase 2), which significantly improved electrical reliability and updated the engine lineup. It continued to be sold alongside the Clio IV until 2014 under the 'Clio Collection' badge.
The Renault Clio III is a tale of two halves. If you buy a Phase 1 (2005-2008) with a 1.5 dCi engine, you are playing Russian roulette with your wallet due to injection and rod bearing failures. However, if you opt for a petrol engine (especially the excellent 1.2 TCe) or a post-2009 Phase 2 model, the Clio III is an outstanding, comfortable, and highly reliable daily driver. The RS version remains a legendary driver's car, provided the gearbox has been maintained. Buy smart, and it's a fantastic used car bargain.
