Renault Clio III (2005 – 2012)

Reliability score : 8.2/10

The Renault Clio III (X85), introduced in 2005, marked a significant shift for the French supermini, moving from a lightweight city car to a mature, comfortable, and highly safe subcompact (achieving a 5-star Euro NCAP rating). It won the European Car of the Year award in 2006. Built on the Nissan-Renault B platform, it offers excellent ride quality and interior space. The model received a major facelift in 2009 (Phase 2), which updated the front fascia, improved interior material quality, and resolved many early electrical and mechanical gremlins. While this report focuses heavily on the highly recommended petrol variants, the Clio III was also widely sold with the 1.5 dCi diesel, which requires careful consideration due to early reliability issues.

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Clio III is an excellent used buy provided you choose the right engine. As a petrol-focused buyer, you are in the sweet spot: the 1.2 16v is a perfect, low-cost city car, while the 1.2 TCe is arguably the best all-rounder in the lineup, offering modern turbo torque with old-school reliability. The 1.4 and 1.6 are fine but require attention to ignition coils and timing belts. Avoid the pre-2009 1.5 dCi diesels at all costs due to severe injection and bottom-end failures. Opt for a Phase 2 (2009-2012) model if possible, as Renault significantly improved interior quality and electrical reliability.
