Renault Clio III (2005 – 2012)

Reliability score : 7.2/10

The Renault Clio III marks a major turning point for the diamond-badged city car. Larger, heavier, and significantly better finished than its predecessor, it positions itself almost as a compact car. The first in its category to achieve 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, it offers benchmark suspension comfort and sound insulation. Diesel Focus (1.5 dCi - K9K): This is the dominant engine in Europe for this generation. However, its history is split into two. Phase 1 (2005-2009) suffered from serious injection failures (Delphi pumps generating metal swarf), ruining the reputation of the 68 and 85 hp versions. Phase 2 (2009-2012) corrected the issue with new injection suppliers and the introduction of the DPF, making the 1.5 dCi extremely reliable and recommendable. Overall generation note:

🎯 Verdict

The Renault Clio III is an excellent used car, provided you choose the right engine. If you are looking for a diesel, the golden rule is to AVOID 2005-2008 (Phase 1) models with 68 and 85 hp, whose Delphi injection pump is a real financial time bomb. On the other hand, the dCi 75 and 90 hp versions of Phase 2 (2009-2012) are highly recommendable: they are reliable, extremely fuel-efficient, and benefit from a car whose early flaws (electrical, finish) have been ironed out. For low-mileage drivers, the petrol engines (1.2 16v and 1.2 TCe) are safe bets, inexpensive to maintain.
